In the early 70s, Gene Hughes, a Utah school teacher, began experiencing a nagging stomach condition. He took the advice of a neighbor who suggested cayenne pepper for his discomfort. It worked! Soon Gene began feeling much better, but swallowing a spoonful of cayenne pepper was awful. That’s when his wife, Kristine, suggested putting the powder into easy-to-swallow gelatin capsules. It was revolutionary! Gene and Kristine soon enlisted the support of family—Dick and Pauline Hughes and Jay and Arva Hughes—to begin a small family business, selling encapsulated cayenne and other herbs and supplements to health food stores.
The family soon realized they wanted to touch more lives with their products, and they found the perfect vehicle for making this happen—direct marketing. This business model allowed them to educate consumers about the vitamin supplement products and provided their sales force an opportunity to share in the success of the company. Today Nature’s Sunshine Products (NSP) can be found in 30 countries, represented by nearly 600,000 distributors.
NSP's Quality Control
The first, and most important reason I love Nature's Sunshine is their quality control. The head of their quality control department, Lynda Hammons, won't compromise the quality of NSP products in the slightest. NSP tests, tests and retests every ingredient and finished product they manufacture. They test for microbial and chemical contamination and to make sure that the plant material is from the right plant, is the right plant part and has the right profile of constituents (meaning it was properly grown and harvested).
Lynda Hammons personally audits venders that supply to NSP to make sure that their facilities are clean and operating to NSP standards. This includes venders in China that supply raw materials for their Chinese herb line. Products coming out of China are frequently contaminated with pesticides and heavy metals and NSP is one company I completely trust to ensure that their Chinese herbs don't contain any of the contaminants.
I've heard people criticize NSP for not being "organic." Well, the truth is that "organic" doesn't mean best. Wildcrafted herbs aren't "organically grown," but in most cases, wildcrafted herbs are better. Furthermore, "organically grown" doesn't mean "contaminant free." NSP actually manufactures to a higher standard than organic, because they guarantee their products are contaminant free through their rigorous testing. And, for those who are concerned about sustainability, NSP also seeks to ensure that their wildcrafted products are sustainably harvested, something that's very important in this industry.
NSP is one of the manufacturers of supplements that is NSF Certified. Click here to see the list of NSF certified supplement manufacturers. More importantly, however, NSP has been a pioneer in quality control for herbal products and supplements and their quality control is second to none in an industry that often has problems with people adulterating or mislabeling products.
NSP's Commitment to Education
Another reason that I love NSP is their commitment to education. NSP has a highly educated sales force because NSP hosts so many quality educational events and has encouraged their Managers and Distributors to learn more, not only about their products, but also about health in general.
They offer Free Education Week Webinars that are available to everyone, including the public.
As a company, Nature’s Sunshine Products takes enormous pride in the quality of the products that are offer. The health products Nature’s Sunshine offers are the very best in the world, and they are committed to leading the industry in product testing and overall product quality. This is the hallmark that separates Nature’s Sunshine Products (NSP) from all other herb-based products offered by health food stores or other direct sales companies. In order to produce high-quality products, NSP starts with the finest raw materials available. NSP subjects each incoming shipment of raw materials to a battery of tests to establish the quality of the material before it is used it in any of the products. Because quality is so important, they continually test raw materials and products throughout the entire production process.
What are Herbs?
Herbs are excellent plant sources of foods loaded with nutrients (vitamins, minerals, enzymes) which our body can use to achieve and maintain good health. Herbs also nourish, regulate, cleanse and help the body heal itself. Herbs are powerful natural foods.
Do Herbs Cure?
No. They nourish. If the body has the ability to heal, it will use the raw materials found in foods to do its own healing work. Herbs do not heal, they feed. Herbs do not force the body to maintain and repair itself. They simply support the body in these natural functions.
Are There Certain Herbs For Certain Diseases?
Herbs do not address disease. Herbs have been chosen - over thousands of years of history - to feed different parts of the body. For instance, you might eat carrots for good eyesight and broccoli for immune supporting antioxidants. Are carrots and broccoli cures for glaucoma and cancer? No! But, wouldn't you consume these nourishing herbal foods "at times of" these afflictions? History's answer is yes! Thus we get "Historical uses."
Why Do Some Herbs Work and Others Do Not?
Herbs always work, they work because they are only feeding the body. Have you ever heard of carrots not working? It's not that the herb didn't work...it's that your body didn't need those materials to do the healing work you expected. Also, some people have poor digestive systems and may not be absorbing the nutrients completely.
Is Natural Health a Replacement For Medical Doctors and Hospitals?
No. Natural health is a way of life! It's learning to form a lifestyle that supports and fosters health (i.e., pure water, wholesome foods, exercise, good outlook, stress management, etc.) Joy of life is the foundation of natural health, not fear of death. Seek a health professional that helps you further your choice and rights.
Are Dietary Supplements an Important Part of Natural Health?
Absolutely. The foods we have today are S.A.D. (Standard American Diet). Modern farming practices and food processing have rendered our food supply deficient and unbalanced. Our bodies take in too much of some things, not enough of others, and some things that should never be consumed. Wholesome food is hard to find. Dietary supplementation may help satisfy nutritional deficiencies, support natural body processes that cleanse undesirable substances from the body, and promote the endurance and longevity desired.
